Is this your first time using Destiny Library Manager or do you need an update on how the program can make your job easier?  This training will review circulation and catalog features but goes beyond to focus on the new graphic interface, Destiny Quest, and the enhanced content subscriptions, such as WebPath Express, One Search, and Lexiles that enable you to better integrate library media services into curriculum and classroom activities.

Session 1B
AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner
Recently AASL developed and published Standards for the 21st-Century Learner as a vision for teaching and learning to both guide and engage our profession as education leaders.  These standards will shape the library program and serve as a guide for library media specialists to use to define the learning of students in our schools.  This program will provide an overview of the four standards and the common beliefs that provide their foundation, serving as a springboard for RIEMA/RILINK sponsored workshops planned for each standard during the 2009 - 2010 school year.

Session 3A
Young Adult Literature:  Round Table Discussion
Making choices about what to include in your collections can be a challenge  given the proliferation in the field of YA literature and shrinking book budgets.  Meeting with colleagues is an effective way to meet this challenge and at the same time share your thoughts about issues such as censorship and intellectual freedom along with other vital concerns related to serving young adult reading needs.  Please come prepared to share a YA title that you have enjoyed, or one that you have concerns about whether to include it in your collection.

Session 3B
Children's Literature:  Round Table Discussion
So many books and so little time!  How can you, as an elementary LMS, know what new books to include in your collections and which ones can be used to effectively integrate library instruction with reading and classroom curriculum?  This session provides an opportunity for you to join your colleagues in a round table discussion of what's new in children's literature and share ideas on collaborative library lessons.  Please come prepared to share a new or recent children's book along with suggestions for how it can be used in library instruction.

Session 3C
Basic Lobbying Techniques for SLMS
Combine the current financial crisis in Rhode Island school districts with the revisions to the state’s Basic Education Program and you have a formula for disaster in our School Library Media Centers.  This means that we all must become active advocates for the students and teachers that depend on the up-to-date resources and reading materials we provide.  But let's face it - becoming an effective activist can be a daunting prospect. This workshop is designed to help you meet the funding and staffing challenges we all face by learning basic lobbying techniques that can be used with school boards, administrators, state education officials and legislators.
