Poetry: Laughs, Lines, and Lessons, at St. Mary’s Academy Bay
View (flyer) (register) (directions),
presented by Patte Weathers-Parry, EdM, MLS. Tired of
reading student-written "I am..." poems co-existing on the page with
hijacked haiku? Is your 811 collection dusty, stodgy, slim to
non-existent? Relax, sit back, and let yourself be eased back into
verse v. free-form and found v. fictional poetry. Poet and librarian Patte Weathers-Parry will discuss poets whose books work well with short
timeframes, review lessons she has used, and provide writing exercises for
you to use. Approved by the RI Dept. of Education for two
contact hours Professional Credit, #1000540.

8th Annual May Breakfast, Reading
Across Rhode Island with Keynote speaker Annie Barrows, co-author of
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann
Shaffer and Annie Barrows, chosen by the Rhode Island Center for the Book at
the Providence Public Library as this year's title. Ms. Barrows is
also the author of the childrens series Ivy and Bean and The
Magic Half. Mary Ann Shaffer, a librarian and editor,
nurtured the tale about Guernsey for twenty years before committing pen to
paper. Unfortunately, Ms. Shaffer passed away in February, 2008 before the
final edits to the manuscript were complete. She asked her niece, Annie
Barrows, to complete the revisions - and the story is now ours to share with
all Rhode Islanders. The story: Shortly after the end of
WWII, Juliet Ashton of London receives a letter from a founding member of
the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society only the beginning of a
series of letters bridging two islands and chronicling the story of the
Guernsey islanders indomitable spirit during the German occupation.
