Quote regarding the importance of school libraries
Deborah A. Gist
R.I. Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education
April 19, 2010
"To prepare our graduates for success in college, careers, and life, we must
make sure that all of our students have the skills they will need in the
21st-century knowledge economy. Tomorrow's graduates must be able to solve
problems, think for themselves, learn independently, and find accurate and
reliable information from among the millions of sources available to them at the
click of a mouse. Students learn these valuable skills in school libraries and
through effective library-media programs. We must continue to support these
programs, which play a vital role in education today."
Requested by Suzanne Costa, of the R.I. Educational Media Association (RIEMA) for use in news release re RIEMA testimony on ESEA reauthorization.
